The city of York has good sports facilities, with a number of university teams and local teams. Located on Grosvenor Road, the Bootham Crescent stadium functions as the homeground of York City, who have been based here since 1932. This stadium has a capacity of just over 7,800 spectators, with several important FA Cup matches being played here over the years.The city also boasts an impressive rugby league heritage, with the York City Knights being based at the Huntington Stadium, which is located on Kathryn Avenue, on the north-easterly outskirts. Opened in 1989, the Huntington can seat just under 3,500 spectators.
The River Ouse runs straight through the centre of York and is a particularly scenic spot for walking and cycling, with plenty of riverside benches should you need a sit-down. An open rowing club is based beneath the historic Lendal Bridge and this team can often be seen practising along the Ouse. There are also a couple of sailing clubs based close to the city (at Bishopthorpe and Naburn), frequently sailing their dinghies on this river.
Horse racing is a historic sport in the city and the York Racecourse began its life all the way back in the early 1730s, being situated in the Knavesmire area, on the southern side of the city. Thousands head to this racecourse each year for its meetings, with Royal Ascot actually staged here in 2005. Each August, the Ebor Handicap takes place at the course, as part of the Ebor Festival.
